RSS Feed Usage

For usage of the RSS feed offering of Warpstock Europe, an application with support for the RSS format is required.

The following common Internet applications have built-in support for RSS:

  • Mozilla Firefox, a web browser that is freely available for many operating systems
  • Mozilla Thunderbird, an e-mail client that is freely available for many operating systems
  • Opera, a web browser that is freely available for several operating systems
  • Safari, a web browser for MacOS X from Apple Computer

Mozilla SeaMonkey, Microsoft Internet Explorer up to version 6.x, and Microsoft Outlook do not provide RSS support. However, it can be added by installing additional programs.

An extensive list of extensions and stand-alone applications is available at Wikipedia.

Some short directions for setting up different applications:

Mozilla Firefox

Firefox automatically detects if a web site provides an RSS feed. To subscribe to the warpevents.eu RSS feed, open the warpevents.eu home page. Press the orange RSS icon that is displayed at the right of the location field. This opens the "Add Dynamic Bookmark" dialog. Firefox manages RSS feeds as folders, and the bookmarks located inside each represent a news item. Via the "Create in" list, you can define where to file the RSS feed inside of your bookmarks hierarchy. Confirm with "OK." Now you can access the RSS feed by opening the related folder.

If you plan to subscribe to a larger number of feeds, you may want to consider using one of the available extensions.

Mozilla Thunderbird

Thunderbird is capable of managing RSS feeds like e-mails. Select "File > New > Account." In the following dialog, choose the option for creating a new account of the "RSS News & Blogs" type. Right-click on the new account and select "Subscribe to Feeds." In the following dialog, press "Add" and enter www.warpevents.eu/en/rss.xml as URL. Press "OK" to confirm. Now you can display the feed messages by selecting the account.

Mozilla SeaMonkey

SeaMonkey does not offer RSS support by default. You have to install an add-on, e.g., the freely available NewsFox or Habari Xenu.

Habari Xenu

Install Habari Xenu. Select "Tools > Habari Xenu News Aggregator." You may want to change some settings in the wizard. On the "Feed settings" page, a good value for "Timeout feed request after" is 60 seconds. Press the "Next" button. On the "Display Settings" page, enable "Show details about feed with headlines," "Open news item in a new window," and "Show 'Subscribe' in the context menu." Press "Optimize Tabbed Browsing." Press "Next" and "Finish." Go to the warpevents.eu home page and right-click on the RSS icon below the news messages on the right. Select "Subscribe to News Feed at link," enter "warpevents.eu: Latest News" as the title, and select the "Habari Xenu Feeds" folder to store the bookmark. Confirm by pressing "OK." Now you can display the feed by selecting "Tools > Habari Xenu News Aggregator" and clicking on the "warpevents.eu" item on the left.

NewsFox

Note that not all versions seem to work well with SeaMonkey for OS/2. You may have to try a development or older version. Install it. Select "Tools > NewsFox" and click the "New feed" icon (a page icon with a green plus). In the new dialog "Feed Options," enter www.warpstock.eu/en/rss.xml as the URL. To display the feed, select "warpevents.eu: Latest News" from the "Feeds" pane.

Microsoft Internet Explorer

First of all, you have to install a plug-in for Internet Explorer, e.g., the freely available Pluck. Download and install it. Open the warpevents.eu home page.

Open the Pluck bar by pressing the Pluck icon in the Internet Explorer tool bar. Right-click on "My Feeds" and select "New > Feed > Manually add feed." In the following dialog, enter "warpevents.eu" as the feed name, and www.warpstock.eu/en/rss.xml as the feed URL. Close the dialog by pressing "OK." Now you can display the feed by opening the Pluck bar and selecting "warpevents.eu" from the "My Feeds" list.

Note: The tool bar added to Internet Explorer 6 by Pluck can be disabled by selecting "Extras > Manage Add Ons."

Opera

Current versions of the Opera browser automatically detect if a web site provides an RSS feed. To subscribe to the warpevents.eu RSS feed, open the warpevents.eu home page. Press the blue RSS icon that is displayed next to the location field. This invokes a new dialog. Confirm the subscription by pressing "Yes." Now you can access the RSS feed by selecting "Feeds" from the menu bar and choosing the warpevents.eu feed.

In case of older versions, the feed has to be selected in the e-mail feature of the browser.
